CHAPTER 2:

WOW! Let me tell you..this place Baker,Smith and Smith-the law firm..is not what I expected at all! I just got in here...and it's like being in the Ritz or the Hilton..ok,yeah,I've never been to those either..but this law firm is too posh! It is pleasingly lit and the lobby is well...classy..there's an awesome Rossetti hanging on the wall and a tall brunette is behind the receptionist desk.

She looks at me,and walks up.She's wearing a white skirt and a black satiny shirt that shows off her creamy complexion-Ari would be impressed.

"So...you're the new girl..."she says, not very impressed by what she's seeing,I can tell.

"Oh Yes..I'm Ananya Ram..nice to meet you"-I offer my hand..but she just turns and walks up to the desk "I'm Sandra-So,lets get a few things straight"she says and sits down on her elegant chair behind the stylish receptionist desk.

I look at her and she goes "Rule number one:DONT wear jeans here..it's a law firm for heaven's sake and not a dorm-party!"

Oh..right..so much for being "professional yet casual"..i guess i need to wear skirts or formal pants..i open my mouth to ask her..but she's in no mood to listen.

"Rule number two:When you're on the phone-talk calmly, professionally and as though you care for their problems, even if you dont. You're going to be transferring phone calls, and so I have a list here of the workers in the firm...use this and transfer calls to their lines"

"Right..ok"I say

"And...Rule number three:deal firmly with people who actually come here and want to meet the law firm members,or talk to them-such people are mostly no good...so ,unless they have an appointment,no meeting anybody, right?"

'Yeah...Ok"

"And..look,you're here because I have lots of work to do-I'm the receptionist ,and you're assisting me-so you do what I say, right?"

"OK"i nod vigorously,to show I understand.What does she think I am?A moron?!!!

And , the phone rings..she glances at me,to pick it up.I do.

"Baker,Smith and Smith. How may I help you?"I start off well.

"Could I talk to Jack, please. This is Ms.Foster?"a woman asks ,in a some-what screeching voice.

Jack...Jack..I scroll through the list Sandra gave me...Jack Murphy ,I find..I put Mr.Murphy's line on.

"Mr.Murphy...Ms.Foster on the line"

"Oh..right..I'll talk"he says,and I transfer the line-job well done!But Sandra doesnt even look,she's bent beneath the desk,searching for something.

"What did you say your name was?"she asks.

"Ananya"I reply.

"Ananya"she says..she pronounces it like 'onion' with a 'ya' in the end...yeah....great.

An hour and 15 calls later,I'm just starting to warm up.It's pretty nice here actually.I get paid 10 $, an hour-not much,I know..but I'm not complaining.I need the money.Sandra's almost under the desk, mending her shoes ...yes..she's doing exactly that..talk about having lots of work.

A tall man rushes in,his tie swinging..he's apparently been walking fast,if not running...

"I need Mr.Baker ..he's not picking his phone..could you call him from here?"he asks me.

Sandra's still mending her shoe,so..

"No,sir..i'm afraid Mr.Baker's busy"-I remembered Rule No three:deal firmly with people who actually come here and want to meet the law firm members,or talk to them.

"Oh man...come on...call him..it's urgent ..cant you see?"he's tense now-his grey eyes poring into me.

"But sir.."I begin...Sandra's just surfaced from behind the desk....

"OH MY GOD!"she says.."Mr.Smith,i'll call him at once" she tells that man.

WAIT-Mr.Smith-oh oh....

Which is when an old man comes from the lift and says."Come Richard,I just saw your call..let's be off...and fast"-and the tall man follows him out, with a parting stare at me..

"What on earth did you do?"Sandra almost screams-ok,how on earth am I supposed to understand that Mr.Smith, the partner of the firm, was that young man???!!!! I expected Mr.Smith to be a wizened old, bald man-not a dark-haired,grey eyed man who would at most ,be in his mid 20's.

"You messed up"and for someone who's been mending shoes , instead of working, that's too much.Sandra yells"You messed up-big time"
